With the rapid investment by governments and industry in the United States, there was a national need for a database and website to drive the transition to the biobased economy driven by domestically produced Climate-Smart Commodities. As one of the leading think tanks and research labs in the country in this domain, the team at the Dynamic Sustainability Lab (DSL) is regularly contacted by agricultural growers, foresters, manufacturers and brands to help facilitate the uptake of these low carbon solutions. We heard you!

At the DSL we have taken the leadership role in addressing this need by developing a National Website and Database for the Market Pull of Climate-Smart Commodities to benefit both rural communities and American agriculture and manufacturing.

The USDA Partnerships of Climate-Smart Commodities program has invested $3.1 billion to support American farmers, ranchers, and private forest landowners in our rural areas to be more competitive. This effort will expand markets for America’s Climate-Smart Commodities, leverage the greenhouse gas benefits of Climate-Smart Commodity production, and provide direct, meaningful benefits to production agriculture, including for small and underserved producers.

While many of the program’s grants have a focus towards on-farm activities the DSL recognized the critical gap in developing the market pull mechanisms necessary to get the Climate-Smart agriculture and forestry feedstocks into the domestic and global marketplace thus creating more jobs and added value to local economies.

This is where we stepped in. Leveraging our unique strengths and with the partial support of a grant from the USDA, the DSL is leading national efforts to increase market pull for Climate-Smart Commodities through development of financial, operational, policy and market mechanisms. This includes sectors that span the U.S. economy such as energy, fuels, chemicals, plastics and consumer products including increasing exportation of American green goods and technologies.

One of our goals was the creation of the national registry and web portal for Climate-Smart Commodities. This newly launched platform allows producers, buyers and service providers to register their companies as well as to connect with one another to facilitate the growth of this emerging industrial sector. Additionally, the site provides valuable resources and incentives available to producers and buyers, as well as important interactive visualizations and databases of climate-smart commodities and the bioeconomy in the United States. The site will be continually updated. If your organization wants to be recognized, please feel free to reach out to me directly with your information or any suggestions. We are excited to serve our farmers and manufacturers!
